Art, Culture, and Diversity in Buffalo, NY

The transition from the College Support Program to the College Internship Program is giving us the opportunity to grow our Creative Arts program at CIP Amherst. Currently, our students participate in the National CIP Art Contest, can choose from a variety of classes through the different colleges, use CIP tech labs which house Apple computers, and in the future, smart boards.

If you are a student who is inspired by the arts, the community of Buffalo, New York provides citizens with many opportunities to get involved with the arts. If you are interested in continuing your education in art, the academic options are endless.

Three current CIP Amherst students take advantage of degree programs including: Daemen College Animation program, and Erie Community College Information Technology Program and Visual Communications Technology Program.

Daemen College Animation Program
?will provide students with much more than a?technical knowledge of Animation. Students will gain a strong foundation in the Fine Arts to support their investigation of story, action, and visual effects. Students in the Animation Program will be trained as artists and thinkers, and will be able to transfer their creative strengths directly into the field of animation.

The program is built around multiple strengths, recognized by animation professionals and?business leaders, including the combination of flexibility and breadth of a liberal arts program; the strong visual skills of a fine arts program; and the technological opportunities presented by upper level, specialized animation instruction. Students will also be provided with specialized technical training in 2D and 3D animation within a fine arts context.?

Currently, we have one CIP student enrolled in the Animation program, and he is working towards his future goal of becoming an employee of Disney. Here is some of his work:

Erie Community College Visual Communications Technology Program
The ?Visual Communications Technology?Graphic Arts &?Printing? curriculum specializes in courses in electronic publishing, print?administration, electronic imaging and image assembly and lithographic press.

To supplement classroom learning, hands-on laboratories are provided, as?well as tutor monitored laboratories, for the majority of curriculum intensive?courses. The objective of this curriculum is to prepare students for a wide?range of job opportunities as technicians working within the graphic arts printing industry.

Another one of our CIP students is interested and involved in the Graphic Arts and Printing aspect of the arts at Erie. This student has participated in enriching?internship experiences in the Buffalo area, diversifying his knowledge and?background of graphic arts. He has completed an internship with Sommer and?Son?s Printing Press, and another with Eden Kosher Homes.

Erie Community College: Information Technology Program
Another academic option for students interested in art and computers. ?The Information Technology Associate in Applied Science degree provides students with the skills needed to succeed in today?s digital world.

During the first year of study, Information Technology students will acquire a broad business and real world perspective of information technology, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, knowledge of data design and data management principles and knowledge of basic programming and computer logic principles. These skills will provide students with the foundation needed to advance to their second year of study. In the second year of the program, students will choose one of seven areas to specialize.?

As an area of concentration, one of our CIP students decided to work towards his specialization in Web Page Design. Web Page Design Certificate program is designed to address the industry?s need for designers to possess greater competency in language, visual communication and graphic design skill, as well as formal training in essential industry standard software programs.

The program will be beneficial for both Web page designers who want to upgrade their skills and students who want to obtain the necessary skills to obtain an entry-level Web page designer position. Students will enjoy small class sizes and hands-on opportunities to utilize the latest in hardware and software. This is a growing field and graduates will find positions with advertising agencies, government agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses.?

Interested in experiencing some art and culture within the community? The Albright Knox Art Gallery is ?dedicated to enhancing the understanding and appreciation of contemporary and modern art. As a hub of artistic and cultural energies, it strives to be an inspiring educational resource for all audiences.

Founded officially in December 1862, The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy?the governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery?is among the country?s oldest public arts institutions in the United States.? The gallery offers different exhibits, art events, and even gives our students and community members the?opportunity to take art classes and workshops.

In addition to the Albright- Knox, right down the street you will find?The Burchfield Penney Art Center. ?This center produces both print?and digital publications for many of its exhibitions.

The Burchfield Penney Art Center?s permanent collection spans the late 19th century?through today, and includes the world?s largest collection of works by?acclaimed watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), as well as the artist?s journals, which provide unique insight into his style and process.

The permanent collection also includes work from more than 800 other artists who, like Burchfield, are indelibly connected to the Western New York landscape. The Burchfield Penney Art Center features 16 galleries and display areas in 19,000 square feet of space,?each one with its own unique purpose and feel.?

?American Style Magazine cited the initiatives at Tri-Main Center as a catalyst for Buffalo?s growing arts community. As a strong supporter of the vibrant arts and cultural community in and around Buffalo, Tri-Main Center houses exhibit spaces,?classes and studios that are open to the public.

Along with the renowned Albright-Knox Gallery, The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, and the Burchfield-Penny Art Center, the Tri-Main Center is an integral component of the Olmsted Crescent, a district encompassing Buffalo?s ?see? and ?do? attractions. It?s a hub for the arts, houses many different tenants including:?
